A 109-run stand between Students skipper Oscar Lambourn and Rehan Bari proved pivotal in the round three clash at Kialla Park against a Mooroopna outfit chasing its first win, lifting Old Students from 4-71 after 22 overs to an imposing 6-212.
It was visiting paceman Cooper Sleeth, however, who put the pressure on early with the wickets of Students’ openers Emile Haratbar and Noah Muir, before Ryan Hallum had the dangerous Felix Odell dismissed for 15.
A mix-up in the middle between co-captains Lambourn and Sam O’Brien further planted the momentum with Mooroopna, but it would be forced to wait another 20 overs to snap Bari and Lambourn’s game-changing partnership.
Both raised the bat with Lambourn (76 off 115) top-scoring, while Bari’s 52 helped Old Students accelerate past the 200 mark.
With the job done with the bat, it was over to the bowlers, and they didn’t disappoint either.

Opener Jamie Carr enticed Paul and Brodie McDonald into errant shots, both catches pouched by recruit Wajh e Ali Bangash to get the ball rolling.
Jack Gaskill (31 runs) and Cyrus Shafi (22) stabilised the innings momentarily with a 56-run partnership, but the introduction of spin duo Odell and Ed Pike turned the game on its head.
A costly five-over spell put paid to Mooroopna’s ambitions of victory, with Odell’s first delivery of the innings bowling Shafi around his legs before Pike lulled Gaskill into a big shot that ended in the hands of Liam Callegari.
Odell added Jake Wright to his growing list of scalps and, an over later, Jake Baker spooned a ball right back to Pike.
When Odell trapped Corey Meyer LBW, the Mooroopna resistance was all but done at 7-89.
Odell finished with figures of 3-20 and Pike 2-24 off eight overs, while Wajh e Ali Bangash added a wicket to his three catches for the day and Callegari claiming the final two wickets to bundle out Mooroopna for 117 and seal a 95-run win.
The Students are now off to a 2-0 start to the Haisman Shield season heading into the first round of two-day cricket, where Pine Lodge will await.
Meanwhile, Mooroopna has dropped its first three games and will be desperate to snap that run of outs when it meets the Lodgers after the bye.
THE GAME

STAR PLAYER
Oscar Lambourn (Old Students): A well-constructed, well-timed captain’s knock of 76 laid the groundwork for his side’s match-winning total.
