The Cats didn’t get what they were hoping for out of their first home game of 2025, as the side was put to the sword by a scarily good Mt Pleasant.
LBU managed five goals in the opening quarter, while the Mighty Mounts made their skill apparent, piling on 16 to open their account.
After warming into the contest, the Cats managed to play a much better brand of netball, even shaving a couple of goals off Mt Pleasant’s lead.
Still, the Mighty Mounts did enough to hold a double-digit lead heading into the major break.
The visitors returned to their best in the second half, firing 17 shots through the net in the third term alone, with the hosts tallying seven in reply.
With a 22-goal lead to erase in the final quarter, the Cats had some work to do down the stretch.
Ultimately, the Mighty Mounts were too good on the day, rounding out the match with a 19-goal effort while LBU was able to finish with 11.
The final score was LBU 32 to Mt Pleasant 62.
The onslaught will continue into the next round as the Cats will host major flag threat Colbinabbin, which scored 90 goals against Heathcote.
L-G v Huntly
The Bombers suffered a similar fate to LBU, albeit performing marginally better against a comparable opponent.
To the credit of both teams the first quarter was neck-and-neck with the Hawks pulling off a minor advantage of three goals at the first break.
L-G managed to keep pace in the second period, adding another 11 goals to their tally with a 15-goal effort from Huntly pushing the lead out to seven.
Another strong quarter from the Hawks in the third term further extended their lead, goaling 16 times while restricting L-G to 10.
You couldn’t call the Bombers’ performance bad by any stretch, managing double figures in goals in every quarter, but it was Huntly’s potent attack that kept it in front, producing 18 in the final frame to win the day comfortably.
The final score was L-G 43 to Huntly 64.
After seeing what happened to LBU at the hands of the table-topping Mighty Mounts, the Bombers will have work to do when they travel to Tooleen Recreation Reserve in round four.
