The gap between first and second in the 2025 Murray Football League appears to be wider than initially expected after Moama fell short of Congupna in an eye-widening encounter in round 11.

What was always going to be a legitimate test of strength for a somewhat surprising Magpies side, The Road quickly brought it back down to earth in a 91-point statement victory.

While Moama got its day started almost immediately in the first quarter, things looked shaky from there, with Congupna nailing five unanswered goals in response.

A Kyle Mueller double on either side of a Moama goal kept the foot on the throat for The Road, extending their lead through the remainder of the second quarter to 36.

While the Magpies got a couple to go their way in the third quarter, it was little resistance to a Congupna unit that found its groove, nailing 6.4 to take a commanding advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Magpies did well to conjure 2.3 to end their day, but by that time The Road was well and truly across the line, putting in a tidy 5.5 in the fourth quarter to not only win the game, but send a strong back-to-back premiership message to the rest of the league.

Fraser Verhey, Liam Barrett, Sam Hooppell, Luka Simpson, Tobias Thoolen and Bodhi Teasdale-Dohnt were named as Moama’s best in the 6.5 (41) to 19.18 (132) defeat.

Despite the beating, the Magpies still sit in second on the ladder with two losses to their name, but will face stiff competition in round 12 when they return home to host third-placed Mulwala.
