Corowa-Rutherglen Roos recorded a big 54-point win over the North Albury Hoppers at John Foord Oval last Saturday.
A good crowd turned out to see the Roos show why they are in contention for a finals berth in the Ovens and Murray this season.
Saturday’s game was an opportunity for the Roos to celebrate the 100th game of reliable defender Jack Schilg who finished in the best players on the day.
Also, part of the day was the reunion of the 2000 Premiership. After a number of false starts due to covid, the players, coaches, officials and supporters of the team were able to catch up, reminisce and view the documentary, Road to Success during the day.
With JFO once again in excellent condition the game started with a lot of energy from both teams as they worked to establish some early ascendency.
An early goal by Jedd Longmire broke the ice for the Roos. Continued forward moves produced little return until later in the quarter when Cameron Wilson kicked two goals in quick succession, followed by a long goal from Cameron Barrett. At quarter time the Roos led 4.2.26 to the Hoppers 0.1.1.
The second quarter saw the Roos further build on their strong team play, to dominate the inside 50s. The run from defence by Jack Schilg and Cody Howard was providing the forwards with opportunities. But it wasn’t until the 12-minute mark that Matt Grantham was able to convert with a strong run through half-forward.
Kaelan Bradtke was providing a focal point up forward with his strong leads and sure hands. Cameron and Damien Wilson were getting plenty of possessions around the ground and Jy Lane was continuing his consistent season with his clearance work from the stoppages. The Roos went in at half-time with a strong 39-point lead.
After the long break the Roos quicky went into attack with a Will Robinson goal to extend their lead.
Roo midfielders Jy and Jarrod Lane continued to work the ball into attack to keep the game on Corowa-Rutherglen’s terms.
Hayden Filliponi was enjoying playing further up the ground and winning possessions accordingly.
Longmire lifted his work-rate to score another goal, and Bradtke was using his strong running to provide an avenue to goal later in the quarter.
The defensive unit of Jack Schilg, Cody Howard, Joe Hansen and Callum Spencer were starting to show the benefits of working together to repel attacking moves.
At three-quarter time, the Roos lead was 58 points, 12.6.78 to 2.8.20. The only question remaining was how well the Roos could finish off the game to complete the day.
The final quarter saw 2 early goals to Jarrod Lane and Bradtke, but the Hoppers found something extra to eventually outscore the Roos 4 goals to 2 goals.
The Roos ran-out 54-point winners to move inside the top 5 at the mid-point of the season.

Under 18s
The Roos notched up another win against the Hoppers on the weekend, making their way back into the top five. The boys dominated from the first bounce and went into the quarter time break with a five-goal lead. The defenders doing a great job, restricted the Hoppers to just one point.
The second quarter was also a one-sided affair with the Roos kicking another five goals to two, although it should have been a lot more, with the Roo's inaccuracy in front of goals proving to be an issue.
After the main break, the Hoppers got two quick goals, but to the Roos credit, they dug deep and started to run away with the game again, with a six-goal haul for the quarter.
Ryan Beveridge was well on his way to another ten-goal game, and with the support of Finn Osborne, Jesse
Johnstone and Jesse Moloney dominating the midfield, big Bevo's job was made a lot easier with their pin-point delivery into the forward line.
The last quarter was again, another good one for the Roos with Matt Bush and Patty Lavis coming right into the game, along with Josh Coonan also getting a lot of the ball.
The Roos eventually came away 114-point winners in a great percentage boosting win.
