Not all GMLTA competitions are into the swing of things again however, with the top flight GM1 competition still remaining on break until January 31, but the GM2 competition has returned and delivered a number of fascinating results on Saturday.
In a heavyweight top four clash, Kyabram battled the Shepparton Lawn Demons at the Demons’ home turf.
It seemed Shepparton Lawn had the ascendancy early over the Bombers, claiming the opening two rubbers 6-3, 6-2, immediately stamping a sizeable games buffer.
Kyabram’s Rhiann Eddy would respond with a 2-6 win over Anna Reynolds, before Demon Ruby O’Callaghan edged out a 6-5 win to establish Shepparton Lawn with a 3-1 sets lead.
However, the doubles rubbers were where the Bombers clicked into gear.
Three straight rubber wins took Kyabram into the lead, 3-35 to 4-40, but O’Callaghan would step up again in the fourth doubles set, narrowing the games deficit to two with the rubbers ledger squared.
It would not turn the tide though, with the Demons losing two of the last three sets to fall short 5-59 to 6-67.
The Kyabram win elevates the Bombers to second on the GM2 ladder, while the Demons now hold onto fourth.
In other fixtures, McEwen Reserve trounced Nathalia 10-78 to 1-23 to retain top spot, while Tatura Mayhem’s buffer between sixth and seventh on the ladder has grown with an 8-69 to 3-40 win over KPOS Colonels.
The Shepparton Lawn Blues and Euroa Back Markers’ clash was deemed a draw due to players impacted by the Longwood fires, as was the Euroa Brumbies and Numurkah’s match.
