Eagles fall to resurgent Finley

Echuca United went down to Finley on Saturday.

Echuca United became the latest victim of Finley’s too little, too late run in Murray Football League, downed by 46 points in round 18.

The Cats had been on a roll since they went past the Eagles in the previous meeting on June 27 and kicked clear of United on the table with the 12.14 (86) to 6.4 (40) victory.

The first quarter at Finley Recreation Reserve was a real arm wrestle and United was well in the game after kicking one goal to the hosts’ two to trail by six.

However, the Cats would accelerate in the second, kicking three more and a glut of minor scores to burst clear, while the Eagles were relegated to minor scores.

Down 29 at the half, United attempted to claw back some of the deficit in the third, finding three goals.

Finley remained wayward, but still found the target twice, the Eagles shaving three points off the deficit in the term.

The Cats were more clinical in the final quarter and, while United found another couple of majors, the hosts put the icing on the game with another five goals to score a big win.

Echuca United will now need to win both of its remaining games to have any chance of getting above its current ninth place.

That looks a tough task, with unbeaten leader Congupna the assignment this weekend and fellow finalist Mulwala waiting in the last round.

The Eagles took points from Congupna in the previous meeting, scoring a draw, and are the only side to have not lost to the leader this season.
