The Eagles’ home finale in the Central Victoria Football League was a disappointing one for the neutrals, as the wet weather scuppered any hopes of free-flowing scoring throughout.
Having upset the Demons in the previous meeting, United went into the game with confidence, but by half time, the sides were no closer to determining a winner after both clubs went goalless on the slow track.
White Hills led 2-1 at the main break, and with the weather showing no signs of letting up, both sides knew any goal would be critical in the second half hour.
The Eagles were the one to make the breakthrough in the third, the only scoring shot of the term going to the hosts’ Ava Plattfuss.
It gave Echuca United a 7-2 lead to protect in the fourth, but the Demons managed to snag their own major down the stretch alongside another behind to win the unusual encounter 9-7.
With one round to go, Echuca United (4-1-8), in eighth, still has an opportunity to improve its position, should it defeat fifth-ranked Marong, away at Malone Park, in the final round this Sunday.
