However, what if you had to repeat the feat every hour, on the hour, with no end in sight?
That is the challenge that can be taken on in Echuca at the 2 Rivers Backyard Ultra, set to begin at noon on Saturday, April 11.
The unique running event sees its brave competitors take on a 6.72km course around Scenic Dve in Echuca, the Murray River a near constant companion at competitors’ sides.
Once they return to the start/finish line, runners get what rest they can, because at the top of the hour it all begins again.
Unlike most running events, there is no set endpoint, with competitors running the circuit hour after hour until they can go no further.
The last athlete standing must complete one final lap before being declared the Backyard Ultra champion.
Last year’s event saw the winner complete 36 laps, finishing at midnight on Monday morning.
There is some respite at the start/finish area, with everything from professional athlete nutrition to lollies, coffee and hot food on site to give athletes a boost before setting out again.
Sixty athletes took on the challenge last year, including 20 from the Echuca Moama Run Club, with organisers hoping to continue to grow the event in its third running this year.
