Shane Black will be continuing his tenure as captain of the C-grade team as preparations continue for the beginning of the cricket season.
Avenel Cricket Club president Duncan Lowis said it was exciting to see the pair so eager to take on leadership positions.
“Both the guys put their hands up so they made the decision pretty easy,” Lowis said.
“Shane will be going into his third year in charge of the C-grade and he really enjoys running that team and helping a lot of the kids that come through with their development.
“For Cameron, this will be his first senior captaincy and he is really keen to help the younger guys make their way into the B-grade team and contribute at senior level.
“Our main focus for next year is more around building our group for the future and I feel these two guys understand and will do a great job in helping us in that space.”
Bassett takes over the captaincy from the trio of Bailey Clark, Scooter Donovan and Jack Hesse, who Lowis said had a tremendous impact on the club in their time at the helm.
“They have all been around the club for a very long time but, due to their life circumstances, it is a bit hard for them to take on the job again. They did a good job last year obviously and we couldn’t be more thankful,” Lowis said.
“They have done a lot of work with the club over a long period of time and I’m sure they will continue to do so well into the future.”
With the cricket season currently at a standstill due to the COVID-19 situation, Lowis said there had not been much news about a start date for the Seymour District Cricket Association.
“There is a lot of unknowns at the moment. Eighty per cent of the league resides within the Mitchell Shire and is in lockdown, so it is hard to get any sort of certainty,” he said.
“Training numbers have been good (when we have been allowed to train), but similarly to everyone else we are just biding our time to see what the directive is from Cricket Victoria when things cool down.”
