Road and traffic light management in Victoria is maintained and run by multiple entities.
While Greater Shepparton City Council oversees a large network of local roads, some roads in the region, such as major highways and arterial roads, are managed by Transport Victoria (formerly VicRoads).
The Department of Transport and Planning is responsible for the planning, approval, installation, operation and maintenance of traffic lights.
Council acting director of infrastructure Janelle Bunfield said helping residents understand who was responsible for local infrastructure made it easier to have issues addressed.
“Not all roads are managed by council, and that can sometimes cause confusion when something goes wrong,” she said.
“We’ve made it simple for residents to check who is responsible for what road and report the issue through the right channel, so it can be fixed as quickly as possible.”
The council is responsible for maintaining more than 1200km of sealed roads across Greater Shepparton.
It oversees routine maintenance such as pothole repairs and street sweeping, as well as larger-scale works including resurfacing, reconstructions and emergency repairs.
Once a local road issue was reported, council said it was prioritised based on inspection data, safety risk, traffic volume and the overall condition of the road network.
