The Committee for Greater Shepparton’s free Liveability Advantage event on Tuesday, October 13, will bring together local leaders and industry representatives to discuss what the region needs to thrive.
C4GS chief executive Linda Nieuwenhuizen said land use, water, workforce and housing were interconnected issues shaping the region’s future.
Attracting and retaining workers will be a key focus, with speakers from local industries including Plunket Orchards and GV Health.
“Jobs are a part of the decision to relocate or stay,” Ms Nieuwenhuizen said.
C4GS’s Fiona Blick will share insights from helping about 900 workers relocate to Greater Shepparton over the past four years, including what encourages new arrivals and existing residents to put down roots.
Housing will also be discussed, with developer John Walkom bringing an outside perspective through his involvement in a multimillion-dollar apartment development in Dubbo.
The discussion will also consider what Melbourne’s continued growth means for regional Victoria.
“Are we a city state or a state of cities?” Ms Nieuwenhuizen said.
“Our city is growing. The demand and skills mix need is changing. How can we build a city that reflects that?”
Ms Nieuwenhuizen said the event aimed to spark conversations and initiatives beyond the evening itself.
“It will be a quick, intense opportunity to sit with like-minded people and have some good conversations,” she said.
“It’s not just the night that’s important but the conversations and initiatives it triggers.”
Between 100 and 140 people are expected to attend, with the event designed to encourage diverse perspectives and connections.
“Our region needs to step up to our role and be recognised for it,” Ms Nieuwenhuizen said.
The Liveability Advantage will be held from 5pm on Tuesday, October 13, at The Woolshed, 114 Seven Creeks Dve, Shepparton.
