Seymour Performers Workshop was announced as one of 17 organisations in the Nicholls electorate chosen to receive funding through the Federal Government’s Volunteer Grants program.
For SPW, the grant will support the purchase of new equipment to support its role within the local community.
“We’ll be using the grant to purchase a range of digital equipment to help support our volunteers,” SPW president Peter Read said.
“With so much of our daily lives online these days, groups such as ours are always having to work hard to keep up so that volunteers feel they are able to do the best for their communities.”
Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, who auspiced the grant for the group, welcomed the funding last month.
“Volunteers are the heart of our community and deserve government support,” he said.
“The selfless work of volunteers keeps our region moving forward, and these grants are a small way of giving back to those who give so much.
“My office received dozens of applications and unfortunately, there was a limited amount of funding available. The over-subscription reflects just how great the need is across our communities and underlines the importance of increasing regionally targeted support.”
Over $60,000 was welcomed to be spread across the 17 not-for-profit organisations, with each successful group awarded between $1000 and $5000.
SPW, an organisation that is kept afloat by its volunteers, relies on funding streams for added support.
“Grants such as these are vital for our organisation and help us to continue to bring quality theatre productions to local audiences and to offer local performers, including our young people, opportunities to tell their stories through the arts,” Mr Read said.
“We are very grateful for this grant, as well as the generous support that we receive from local businesses and organisations, which help us to bring our programs to life each year.”
Looking ahead, the funding will be an added aid in enabling SPW to deliver its locally beloved performances.
“The SPW Community Choir is out and about supporting local events, and we are looking forward to presenting Sweeney Todd at the Seymour College Arts Centre in November later this year,” Mr Read said.
