The amended plan allows for the future development of a camping and caravan park on the Murray Valley Highway, near Glanmire Boulevard with access to the site directly off the highway.
The park would be a small part of Glanmire Park’s 196 hectares, which is being developed as a staged residential estate of 1,820 lots.
A camping and caravan park could replace about 80 conventional residential lots with approximately 181 tourist sites, including 56 cabins and 125 powered sites.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator, Graeme Emonson said Yarrawonga had the strongest growth rate of all Moira’s townships and, in combination with Mulwala, was an attractive tourism destination.
“Council is pleased to support future infrastructure that will bring more visitors to our Shire, as tourism is a vital part of our economy,” Dr Emonson said.
After discussions with Department of Transport and Planning, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, and North East Water, the proposed amendments were altered to resolve concerns about vegetation loss, vehicle access and infrastructure provision.
Planning consideration for any future permit for a camping and caravan park will look at off-site amenity protection, management arrangements, noise, light spill, urban design, activation of adjacent reserves and sewerage provision.
