Fifteen were killed and about 40 were injured in the Bondi Beach terror attack, where two gunmen opened fire on a celebration of Hannakuh on Sunday, December 14.
In the weeks following the incident that shocked the nation, the region has spoken up in support of the nation’s Jewish community and the wider Sydney area.
Strathbogie Shire Council
Strathbogie Shire Mayor Scott Jeffery issued a statement on Wednesday, December 17.
“I have written to the mayor of Waverley Council, Cr Will Nemesh, expressing our deepest condolences following the tragic events at Bondi on Sunday night,” Cr Jeffery said.
“All Australians should be able to gather in peace without fear of attack.
“Communities all around the country are coming together to celebrate this special time of year, and it’s heartbreaking to know that many in Bondi headed out but never made it home.
“The Shire of Strathbogie stands with Waverley Council, the Jewish community and everyone impacted by this shocking and devastating event.”
Murrindindi Shire Council
On Friday, December 19, Murrindindi Shire Council announced it had moved an urgent motion condemning the attack in the strongest terms, expressing heartfelt condolences to those affected and calling for unity and leadership at every level of society during its meeting on Wednesday, December 17.
“On behalf of Murrindindi Shire Council, I extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones, and to all those whose lives have been profoundly affected by the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach,” Mayor Damien Gallagher said.
“What our country needs now is united leadership and a bipartisan approach — just as we saw after the Port Arthur massacre when parliament stood together to introduce lifesaving gun laws. We must stamp out blame-shifting and the ugly rhetoric that tears at the fabric of our democracy.”
Mitchell Shire Council
In a statement on its Facebook page, Mitchell Shire Council wrote:
“We are deeply saddened by the events in Bondi.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those affected.
“We thank the emergency services, first responders and community members for their swift and brave response. They are a reminder of the importance of looking after one another during times of tragedy.”
