On Monday, July 28, Brandon Hyville-Schaffer started his work experience at the paper, spreading his time between Seymour and the paper’s base in Shepparton.
Throughout the week, the Year 10 student was certainly busy, attending many interviews with journalist Billie Davern, as well as assisting The News’ photographer Rechelle Zammit on a number of jobs.
“I’ve learnt how to properly take pictures on an actual camera that isn’t my phone, and I’ve learnt photoshop, and have gone on lots of jobs with photographers and journalists,” Brandon said.
“I’ve learnt the structure of a newspaper, how it’s written, and how an article is written.”
Some highlights of Brandon’s time were his attendance of the Lower Hume Primary Mental Health Service launch event in Yea, his chat to founder of Love Your Sister Samuel Johnson, and his time taking photos of some of Seymour’s important landmarks, including two local mice at the train station.
Brandon said he would be taking a lot away from his experience.
“It seems scary going out and interviewing people, but, from my experience, it’s not that bad,” he said.
Brandon said he was “definitely considering” a career in journalism after his time at the paper.
We at The Telegraph would like to thank Brandon for his confident, go-getter attitude, and wish him all the best on his future endeavours.
