The Federal Government’s Regional Sport Events Fund will provide grants of up to $50,000 for events that range from introductory days to larger events such as elite sporting exhibitions or state level competitions.
“Sport is often the glue that brings people together, particularly here in the Goulburn Valley, and this fund aims to fast-track the recovery from what’s been a very challenging period for the region,” Mr Drum said.
“Sporting clubs and associations play an incredibly important role in their local communities and through this fund, the Federal Government is encouraging our communities to come together and celebrate through sport.”
Mr Drum said events would also benefit small businesses that were central to local economies.
Each of the five local councils that make up the Nicholls electorate can apply for funding of up to $50,000. Applications close on April 8.
Mr Drum encouraged local councils to work with sporting clubs and organisations to deliver exciting sports events to their respective communities.
Federal Sport Minister Richard Colbeck said the resumption of sporting events would have wide-ranging benefits for regional communities.
“Community sport has been hit hard across Australia due to the pandemic, but we understand the power of local competition and the opportunities it presents to bring communities together,” Senator Colbeck said.
“This fund will support many of the events that were cancelled or postponed to resume and encourage local government to be creative in how they re-engage with their local area.”
