Along with metropolitan Melbourne, Mitchell Shire — which includes Seymour, Tallarook, Broadford, Kilmore and Wallan — has been included in the six-week stage three lock-down to combat Victoria’s coronavirus outbreak, and is scheduled to be enforced from 11.59 pm Wednesday, July 8.
In a Facebook post to supporters, the Lions’ president Gerard O’Sullivan said the club had spoken with league officials and decided it was not possible for it to participate in the proposed competition.
This is due to the Lions’ inability to train or play games for six weeks, which goes beyond the league’s planned start date of Saturday, July 25.
“There’s no doubt this hurts for our players, coaches, committee, supporters and community, but the health and safety of each and every one of you and your family members is paramount,” O’Sullivan said.
“Our club committee and the GVL are here to support you as best we can, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything we can do during this time.”
The club will look into options for providing training or social events for its junior players at a later date.
Goulburn Valley League cancelled its senior competitions last month, but has remained committed to offering a junior competition.
Seymour’s under-16 and under-18 football teams, as well as its under-15 and under-17 netball teams, held their final training sessions last Tuesday night ahead of the lock-down.
