Community members are invited to visit the centre from 9am to noon for an open day on Sunday, June 19.
There will be free entry and a range of fun activities including access to various fitness classes, a jumping castle, a DJ, a sausage sizzle, a visit from the police, army and fire brigade and the chance to win prizes.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Bill Chisholm said SSAC was an important facility and one that contributed to the health and wellbeing of local people.
“It’s a popular place that offers a wide variety of services and activities for people of all life stages and it has acted as a recovery centre during emergencies,” Cr Chisholm said.
“(It) has changed and grown over time to become a true community facility.
“I want to thank the community for their contribution to building the centre and acknowledge the importance of community involvement.
“I encourage community members to come along to the open day to see how the facility has changed and what it has to offer.”
Some big names have visited the SSAC since the heated pool was opened on Tuesday, June 18, 2002.
The opening saw then Sport and Recreation Minister Justin Madden challenging former Australian world champion swimmer Michael Klim to a race.
While the result was never in doubt, the event drew a large crowd.
Originally funded by the Victorian Government, Mitchell Shire Council and the Seymour Heated Indoor Pool Committee, the project has grown into an important part of the Seymour and district community.
The original gym was opened upstairs in December 2002, but the popularity of the space meant a larger area was needed.
The Chittick Park redevelopment was completed in 2013 and replaced the old gym with a new facility at the front of the centre.
The SSAC reduced its carbon footprint in 2019 when it became partially powered by 322 solar panels installed on the roof.
The project was funded by Mitchell Shire Council in collaboration with Mitchell Community Energy.
Whatever your preferred activity, you’re sure to find it at the SSAC. Achieve your fitness goals, enjoy a swim in the pool, shoot some hoops or enjoy a coffee and relax and meet friends.
SSAC offers a wide range of facilities and services to cater for all ages and fitness levels, including a fully-equipped gym, 25m indoor heated pool, 15m indoor heated children's splash pool and a sports stadium.
