The hard workers were treated to a fragrant roast and a time of reflection on the important role they play in the community.
Mary Boruch, a volunteer of three years since her retirement, offers her time as an active member of the Aged Care Standards, the Clinical Governance and the Community Reference committees.
“Because I’ve got a background in health and aged care, I felt, when asked, I could contribute,” Ms Boruch said.
“I’m really happy to do it.”
Seymour Goulburn Lions Club member Heather Dunn has been volunteering at Seymour Health’s social support group for over two decades.
“I didn’t think I’d still be here after 22 years,” Ms Dunn said.
“I love it — it just feels good.
“I usually have a sore stomach from laughing [at the end of the day].”
With four areas of the hospital generating volunteer opportunities — Barrabill House, the Social Support Group, Palliative Care and the Community Reference Committee — volunteers are vital in keeping the ball rolling at Seymour Health.
Seymour Health chief executive Ward Steet said Volunteer Week, which is held from May 19 to 25, is an opportunity to celebrate these diligent workers.
“Volunteer Week is a time for Seymour Health to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of its volunteers,” Mr Steet said.
“The organisation deeply values the role volunteers play in enhancing the wellbeing of patients and residents, and sees this week as an opportunity to express gratitude and raise awareness about the importance of volunteering in health care.
“Volunteers are essential to Seymour Health’s community-focused care model ... Their presence helps create a more compassionate, connected environment for patients and residents, and supports staff in delivering holistic care.”
Aside from the lunch, volunteers have been recognised at Seymour Health with gestures such as public recognition, on their website and social media, and certificates and small tokens of appreciation.
