Seymour court house will be closed until early next year after almost half a metre of floodwater engulfed it in mid-October, but the town’s court cases are still continuing.
Floodwater impacted the entire building when Seymour was hit by flooding on October 14, and as such, court has not been able to operate out of the Tallarook St building since.
A Magistrates’ Court of Victoria spokesperson said all Seymour cases were now being held online, or where requested or appropriate, being heard physically at Shepparton court house on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The spokesperson said there had been no significant impact to the Seymour court’s pending caseload, “with the court able to hear and finalise cases online or with parties attending at Shepparton or another court location where appropriate”.
The court acknowledges that people are still affected by the impacts of the floods and anyone listed to appear in Seymour Magistrates’ Court can arrange an online hearing by contacting the Shepparton court on 9087 5723 or emailing seymourcoordinator@courts.vic.gov.au
If people cannot attend online or in person, they are asked to contact the court on the same phone number or email.
The Magistrates’ Court of Victoria spokesperson said work had started on repairing the damage, including the building being stripped of loose furniture, built-in cabinetry and electrical equipment.
