The eased restrictions in regional Victoria last week meant that competition golf could be played again.
The balmy spring day on Saturday was perfect for re-launching the regular Saturday competition and there were plenty of golfers happy to be taking part.
Both the men and women played stableford and the winner for the women was Pam Jarvis (25) with a very nice 38 points. The extra competition was the best nine in and Irene Davey came home strong with 20 points to win.
The ball pool went to Pam Jarvis, Sue McCall and Irene Davey with 33 points on a countback.
In the men’s competition, Mark Fountain (nine) had a great score of 38 points to win A-grade. Warren Austin (17) won B-grade with 34 points on a countback from Robe Petersen. The C-grade winner was Darren Cook (21) with 34 points on a countback from Kevin Mulvaney and Jerry Bender.
Nearest-the-pins went to Greg Pell on the fourth, Peter Nelson on the sixth, Dave Pearce on the 12th and Paul Niebling on the 17th.
The drive and pitch on the eighth was won by Paul Niebling and the 15th went to Mick Prorok. A score of 34 points was needed for the ball pool.
While restrictions have eased, the club is not yet back to fully-normal operations, so please be mindful of the notices at the clubhouse in relation to playing golf.
Avenel
It is certainly great to be back to competition golf. Mind you, it is great just to get out and have a hit but it is even better to have something to play for.
Despite the weather experts predicting a rainy day, it turned out to be very pleasant, albeit a bit windy. A good field of men (and boys) took on the white course playing stableford, and the winner was a young bloke who confessed before his round that he’d never put two nines together ... well, he did on Saturday! Congratulations to Ollie Aitken, who had 75 off the stick for 43 points. All the practice is paying off.
There was a countback for runner-up, with the young Smith boys tied on 39 points. Lindsay got the chocolates this week over little brother Campbell. It is fantastic to see the youngsters improving and holding their own against the adults.
Nearest-the-pins went to Dale Smith on the fifth and the 18th (apparently the par-3s were his only friends on Saturday) and Ollie claimed the 14th.
Drive and pitch on the seventh went to Russell Marsden, while Ollie won on the 17th.
Line balls went to Lindsay, Campbell, Bernie Stevens (37), Terry Lowis and Adam Harrap (36).
A small field of women also ventured out on to the course and said it was nice to be back playing competition after a lengthy break.
Par was the name of the game and was played off the yellow tees. Lyn C. managed to finish in the positive with +1 to win The Daily Dose/Avenel Pharmacy voucher generously provided by owner Belinda Stevens. Many thanks Belinda.
Balls went to Lyn and Marlene Hull, who finished square, and Dee Wright collected a ball for her shot to the fifth.
Next week the club will be playing the September monthly medal and from all reports the men will be welcoming a few players from Beechworth Golf Club.
Tuesday golf is on as well at 9.30 am for a 10 am tee-off. Someone better get down there and give Dave and Toysy a run for their money!
The course looks great, with thanks to the continued great work from our volunteers. However if anyone has any spare time, there is still a bit of spraying to be done under and around trees and tee markers please.
Good golfing to everyone!
Nagambie
Competition golf resumed at the Nagambie Golf Club with players keen to get straight back into serious play.
Stroke was the men's event with a monthly medal up for grabs.
As most golfers will attest, form is fleeting but class is permanent, and Jeremy Ezard showed just that on Sunday by returning to competition with a one-under-par 71 70 nett to win the medal on a countback.
Ezard's putting seemed well suited to the very slow and recently cored greens, but his solid iron play was where he stamped his authority.
The unlucky runner-up was Hugh Lawrence with possibly one of his best scores at Nagambie thus far, producing a 70 to fall agonisingly short on a countback.
Rounding out the top three was the ever-consistent Dean Brown with 72.
The nearest-the-pins were given a workout with two of the four results going extremely close to an ace. Shane McCormick put it within a couple of feet on the third, Michael Nolan thumped one into the head wind on the eighth, Glen Evans was the happiest anyone has ever seen him with his COVID-19 mask on rattling the 13th and David Love had a sizzling strike on the 16th.
Competition golf will continue at Nagambie next Sunday with a stableford event. The second round of the social club trophy will be played with the extended tee-off time of 8.30 am to 9.30 am.
The following week will see the rescheduling of the Finnigan fourball which is played across two consecutive weeks. Please submit entries to David or Barry no later than Sunday, September 27.
Women
The club is so lucky to be back playing golf with more than two people at a time. Although there are still quite a few restrictions due to COVID-19, we can now go back to a more social level and competition.
Players no longer have to ring Ronda Richards when they wish to practice or play.
The new method is all players, before hitting off (practice or play), must now fill in their details in the green fee book, located in the green fee box.
The winner on Wednesday, September 16, was Sue Verge with 42 points.
The winner of the chicken run on Thursday. September 17, was Karyn Thompson with 22 points.
Today, Wednesday, September 23, will be the women's monthly medal, with stableford being played on the day. Ladies to arrive before 9.15 am to hit off by 9.15 am. The men will hit off at 10 am.
