SEYMOUR

It is good to see the club nearly back to normal, playing pennant twice a week and social bowls on Wednesdays. Club games are in full swing and the bar is open for limited numbers on Friday evenings.

This week there were mixed results for Seymour, with midweek pennant winning one of the three games and weekend pennant gaining only one good win alongside three losses of various degrees.

CBD division one

Kilmore 87 (16) defeated Seymour VRI 62 (0)

What a difference a week and a different opponent made to Seymour VRI, losing on all rinks to a strong Kilmore side and suffering a 25-shot defeat. The loss drops Seymour to third on the CBD division one ladder, while Kilmore moves in to top spot on its own.

Greg Jones’ rink of Phil Challis, Bill Dawe and Ian Cashill started poorly against the wily Kilmore veteran Phil Skehan, scoring a single shot early and finding itself trailing by 15 shots on the eighth end, 1-16. At the 14th end break, Jones had managed to narrowly close the margin to be trailing by nine shots, 8-17. Skehan scored a single on the 15th, but Jones’ rink fought back, winning the next seven ends to actually lead 24-18 with three ends to play. Unfortunately, Seymour VRI didn’t manage to score on the final three ends and although it led 24-23 with one end to play, it dropped a four on that end and was defeated 24-27.

The selectors made an unforced change at second in Joe Purcell’s winning rink from last week, bringing in Paul Rolfe and omitting Mario Furletti. Purcell’s rink of Joy Cashill, Rolfe and Brad Anderson was up against Trevor Young and never looked like getting to the front at any stage. Seymour VRI was unable to score in the first five ends to trail by 12 shots and by scoring on only four of the first 14 ends it trailed by 15 shots, 7–22, at the 14th end break. Although Seymour VRI was more consistent after the break, winning eight of the final 11 ends, it was unable to close the gap, eventually losing 20-30.

Mick Szczykulski’s rink of Moreno Puppa, Helen Flint and Darren McDonald faced John Reimann and although only winning on six of the first 14 ends managed to be level 14-all at the break. Unfortunately, there must have been something in the water at the break and Szczykulski’s rink was only able to win one of the final 11 ends, scoring just two shots while Reimann’s rink scored a further 16 shots, leaving Seymour VRI with a 12-shot loss, 18-30.

CBD division two

Seymour VRI 63 (2) lost to Kilmore 95 (14)

In its first outing for the season after having the bye in round one, Seymour VRI never got started on its home green and lost any chance of winning with only one rink successful, while suffering heavy losses on the other two to lose by 32 shots overall. This leaves it on the bottom of the CBD division two ladder.

Peter Delzotto’s rink of Mark Brett, Kevin Cain and Stuart Crockett was Seymour VRI's sole winning rink, defeating Ron Neil’s rink. Delzotto scored eight shots on six of the first 14 ends to find himself trailing by eight shots at the drinks break. Delzotto’s rink found itself trailing 11-21 after 18 ends but winning the next six ends and scoring 14 shots allowed it to drop a single shot on the final end to run out a 25-22 winner.

Mario Furletti, back from division one and skipping with a rink of John Crockett, Terry Flynn and Geoff Dixon, trailed Ken Campbell’s rink by just a single shot at the seventh end. But after regularly dropping shots over the next seven ends, Seymour VRI was trailing by 16 shots at the 14th end, 9-25. Things got a little better for the team after it won six of the remaining 11 ends, but not by enough as it suffered an 11-shot loss, 20-31.

Returning for his first game of the year, Wayne Noonan’s rink of Wayne Flint, Jim Furletti and Carol Harrop was unable to halt Alan Langdon’s march to victory. Scoring just four shots on two ends, Seymour VRI trailed by 21 shots at the 14th end break, 4-25. Although a better performance after the break allowed Seymour VRI to score on five of the remaining ends, it was never able to close the gap, going down by 24 shots, 18-42.

GVBD division six

AVENEL 65 (14) defeated Seymour VRI 30 (0)

Venturing to Avenel this week proved too difficult a task for Seymour VRI, losing on both rinks and coming home suffering a big loss by 35 shots overall. The result drops it to fourth on the GVBD division six ladder.

Congratulations to Jeannette Anderson, Terry Dowell and Jane Wilson on playing their first pennant games for the club.

Garry Bester’s rink of Terry Dowell, Darren Grieve and Anthony Nachtigal jumped out of the blocks against Josh Kelly’s rink to lead 5-0 after three ends and scores were level at 7-all after the seventh end. However, it found itself trailing 9-13 at the 14th end break. Although winning five of the remaining 11 ends, Seymour VRI was unable to match its opposition's scoring to finally go down by 10 shots, 19-29.

Jane Wilson’s rink of Jeannette Anderson, Joshua Austin and Robert Richards started well to lead 4-3 after four ends, however managed just two further shots to trail 6-21 at the 14th end break. Following the break things didn’t get much better as it continued to find scoring difficult, eventually suffering a 25-shot loss, 11-36.

Capping off a good day as skipper of the only winning rink was Peter Delzotto, who then won the Taurus Meats meat tray for the week.

Round two of midweek pennant continued on Tuesday, November 17, with Seymour VRI having the bye.

Meanwhile, round two of Saturday pennant on November 21 will see CBD division one look to redeem itself at home to its grand final conqueror from last season, Broadford. CBD division two will be looking to break its duck at Broadford against the third-placed side and GVBD division six will be at home on the number two green to Rushworth, with the loser possibly dropping out of the four.

All sides will now be selected on Wednesday evenings, giving teams the opportunity to practice together on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Until next week.

AVENEL

Midweek pennant

Round two saw division five come home with an impressive win against last year's runner-up Katandra West on its synthetic green. Josh Kelly, Roy Cooper, Charlie Kemp, Graeme Toy (s) won 19 ends in a commanding performance, with the 43–12 final score line representing their dominance.

Graham Lewis, Mia Cooper, Norm Billingsley, George Pedler (s) had a close game until end 16 when the score was 17-all. Katandra West then won seven out of the last nine ends to win the game 19–28. The overall score line saw Avenel win the match 12–62 to Katandra West 2–40. The next game for ladder-leader Avenel is a home game against last year’s premier, Dookie.

Division two played Euroa at home, resulting in a repeat of the previous week's results, one win, one loss and a draw. Ruth Underwood, Bill Donovan, Kate Donovan, Noel Slater (s) got off to a cracking start, but Euroa chipped away one shot at a time to draw even at the break. However, Avenel, with steely determination scored 12 shots to three in the second half to come away with a 22–13 win.

Ruth King, Joyce White, Pam Pedder, David Furletti (s) had the lead until the second last end when they held a two-shot advantage. Euroa scored a two on the last end to draw the game 21-all.

Rusty Schwab, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley, Grace Kenworthy (s) lost eight ends straight early in the game and never recovered, losing 13–27 against an accurate Euroa rink.

Avenel lost to Euroa 3-56 to 13–61, which has the club placed fourth on the ladder. Next week Avenel travels to Tatura to play Tat Hill Top Blue 2.

Weekend pennant

The Avenel green was full as both divisions had home games and resounding wins in round two. Division five beat Seymour VRI 14–65 to 0–30. Roy Cooper, Bill Donovan, Donna Rowley, George Pedler (s) bowled accurately and consistently to come away with a 25-shot win, 36–11.

After a close battle all day, Kyle Pedder, Norm Billingsley, Ian Bradley, Josh Kelly (s) were only two-up on end 19. However, a five on end 20 gave them a handy lead which they consolidated by adding a further seven shots over the last three ends to win the game 29–19.

Two wins from two puts Avenel on top of the division six ladder, ahead of this weekend's away game against Nagambie.

Division four played Seymour with three out of four rinks winning, 16–89 to 2-79. Rusty Schwab, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy, Josh McDonald (s) won 25–14 after taking the lead on end six and scoring 19 to eight shots over the remaining ends.

Howard Geldard, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley, Noel Slater (s) drew even six times before scoring 10–1 on the last five ends to win the game 23–16.

Kate Donovan, Pam Pedder, Graeme Lewis, Spud Furletti (s) held a handy seven-shot lead on the 23rd end. Seymour scored a five on the second last end to bring its deficit to two. But Avenel held its nerve to win the last end by two, and therefore the game 25–21.

Jason Toy, Graeme Toy, Rob Kemp, Brett McDonald (s) lost 16–28 against a focused and in- form Seymour rink.

The next game for sixth-placed division four is at home against Shepparton Golf.

The mystery tea is on Thursday, November 26. Please add your name to the list on the noticeboard if you wish to attend.
