CBD midweek pennant
January 28
Seymour VRI 80 (16) d Eildon 52 (0)
Midweek pennant saw Seymour VRI at home to Eildon and with all rinks winning it continued its march up the ladder. With only one rink up and trailing by two shots overall at the lunch break, VRI managed to get its game together over the next 33 ends to record an all-rinks-up win by a healthy margin of 28 shots.
At the time of going to press the midweek side is in fourth place, just four points behind second-placed Wallan, two points behind third-placed Eildon and four points ahead of fifth-placed Seymour. These four clubs will fight it out for the remaining three finals places over the coming four rounds.
Joe Purcell’s rink of Kevin Cain, Garry Bester and Peter Delzotto returned to the winners’ list this week against Jim Wheelhouse’s rink in a close match. With Purcell’s rink winning just five of the first 14 ends, it kept Wheelhouse's rink to narrow end scores to go into the break just two shots down. Following the break, Purcell's rink won the next four ends to lead by seven shots after the 18th end. Losing a single on the 19th end, VRI then proceeded to win the following five ends to extend its lead to 13 shots before Wheelhouse's rink scored a two on the final end, with the final result 24-23.
Greg Jones, presently VRI’s top-ranked skip and seventh-ranked in the CBD, returned to his rink of Geoff Dixon, Paul Rolfe and Jane Wilson against Eildon’s top-ranked skipper, Sharon Hall. After a tight tussle, Jones’ rink moved out to a narrow 11-9 lead at the 14th end break and extended the lead to a handy 11 shots after the 18th end. Jones’ rink controlled results for the remainder of the game, recording a strong nine-shot win.
With Mario Furletti unavailable this week, it was Ian Cashill skipping the rink of Jim Tuckwell, Joy Cashill and Bill Dawe against Rod McGowan's rink. Jumping away to a seven-shot lead after 11 ends, VRI then dropped nine shots over the next three ends to head into the 14th end break two shots down. However, a winning burst after the break saw VRI score eight shots to one to take a five-shot lead, 21-16. The remaining seven ends went Cashill's way, paving the way for his rink to record a solid eight-shot win, 29-21.
Weekend pennant
CBD division one
Broadford 67 (2) lost to Seymour VRI 80 (14)
Seymour VRI travelled to face second-placed Broadford and found itself with just one rink up and trailing by two shots at the 42-end break. Eventually with two rinks getting up and covering the shot difference of the one rink down, VRI got over the top of Broadford by a healthy 13 shots.
Greg Jones, presently VRI and CBD’s top-ranked skip, led his rink of Phil Challis, Bill Dawe and Wayne Noonan against Robert Chapman’s rink and, with ends split equally at seven apiece over the first 14 ends, it was Jones’ score of five on the 13th end that allowed his rink to hold a narrow one-shot lead at the break, 14-15. Jones’ rink then proceeded to dominate the match to record a strong win, 29-18.
Mick Szczykulski’s rink of Moreno Puppa, Helen Flint and Geoff Neal - with Flint and Neal trading positions - was able to score 13 shots on just five end wins over the first 14 ends while opponent Daryl Kelly and his rink secured nine end wins and just 15 shots for a narrow two-shot lead. After the break it was Szczykulski’s rink which jumped out to a five-shot lead at the 17th end. Dropping three shots on the following two ends, Szczykulski’s rink then won the next three ends to extend its lead to 11 before winning by a comfortable nine shots.
Joe Purcell’s rink of Kevin Cain, John Crockett and Brad Anderson was evenly matched against David Ellis’ rink over the first six ends with scores level at four-all. After 12 ends Purcell’s rink held a five-shot lead. However, after dropping two threes on the next two ends, it found itself trailing by one at the 14th end break, which blew out to a seven-shot loss.
CBD division two
Seymour VRI 91 (14) d Broadford 66 (2)
At home against fourth-ranked Broadford in another must win game, VRI was two rinks up and held a 10-shot lead at the 42-end break. With two rinks going on to record wins it was enough to get the overall victory by 25 shots.
Peter Delzotto’s rink, this week consisting of Josh Austin, Terry Dowell, and Stuart Crockett, was a big winner against Arthur Goring’s rink. Delzotto’s rink scored a two on the first end and never relinquished the lead, going on to record a big 19-shot win, 37-18.
Mario Furletti’s rink of Mark Brett, Geoff Dixon and Paul Rolfe looked in trouble early as John Fitzgerald’s rink won four of the first five ends to build a four-shot lead, 6-2. Following the break, Furletti’s rink was in grave danger of being completely over-run as Fitzgerald’s rink built a very handy 10-shot lead after the 17th end, 10-20, with just eight ends remaining. It was then that Furletti’s rink came to life, winning seven ends to add 20 shots and record a great come-from-the-clouds nine-shot win, 30-21.
Ian Cashill returned from division one to the skipping role and, with Jim Tuckwell, Anthony Nachtigal and Jim Furletti, was matched against Jim Bruce’s rink. Although splitting the ends seven-all at the 14th end mark it was Cashill's rink that managed to score heavily to hold a nine-shot lead at the 14th end break. The game was turned on its head after the break as as Bruce's rink swung into the lead with two ends to play. Cashill's rink scored a single on the 24th end to trail by just one but dropped two shots on the final end to suffer a narrow three-shot loss, 24-27.
GVBD division six
Tatura Hilltop 41 (0) lost to Seymour VRI 58 (14)
Another win away - this time against the combined Tatura Hilltop side - has seen Seymour VRI retain top spot on the ladder for another week. Both rinks were up by a combined 12 shots at the 28th end break and the win was in VRI’s hands. Over the final 22 ends the margin slowly built to an overall 17-shot win for Seymour VRI.
Jane Wilson’s rink of Jeanette Anderson, Wayne Flint and Carol Harrop continued on its winning way, matched against youngster Jacob Cartwright’s rink. Wilson's rink burst out of the blocks to win the first four ends and establish a nine-shot lead. Cartwright’s rink fought back to trail by five shots at the 14th end break. The match remained very tight over the next nine ends as Wilson’s rink fought hard to maintain its narrow margin with just two ends remaining. Winning those two remaining ends and adding a further 10 shots saw Wilson's rink record a terrific 14-shot win, 32-18.
Presently VRI and GVBD’s top-ranked skip in division six, Garry Bester, along with his rink of Alan Walton, Darren Greive and Jeff Rhue, went into the 14th end break with a seven-shot lead over Peter Ibbott's rink, 17-10.
After the break, the lead was slowly nibbled away and Bester's rink was just two shots up before the final end. By managing to secure that last end with a single shot, Bester's rink came home with a three-shot victory, 26-23.
This week’s matches: Midweek played away to top side Kilmore on Tuesday, where a win would see it climb as high as second on the ladder, while a loss may see it drop back to fifth place pending other results.
This Saturday’s pennant will see CBD division one at home against Seymour when they will compete for the Stuart Doyle Trophy and the opportunity to challenge for a double chance should any of the clubs above them falter. CBD division two will be away against Seymour, where an expected win against the lower-ranked side will be imperative if VRI is to retain a possible double chance. GVBD division six will be looking to extend its margin atop the ladder at home against second-placed Nagambie, which sits 22 points behind VRI.
Until next week.

Avenel
Midweek pennant
Division two played Seymour at home in round 11 and after trailing the Lions for most of the day, Avenel won the lead when it counted to come away victorious, 14–57 to 2–52.
Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Grace Kenworthy and Geoff Hateley (s) drew even five times in a closely contested game with some accurate bowling by Hateley keeping Avenel in the game. From end 20, with the score at 13-all, Avenel scored six shots to Seymour’s two resulting in a four-shot win for Avenel, 19–15.
After trailing for 19 consecutive ends, Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Pam Pedder and Spud Furletti (s) finally took the lead on end 23. On the last end, Avenel was two up on the scoreboard but three down at the head. With one bowl to come, skip Spud Furletti delivered a perfectly weighted bowl to pick up the jack and move it out of the head to win the end by one and the game by three shots, 20–17.
Lastly, Ruth Underwood, Charlie Kemp, Neville Green and Noel Slater (s) got off to a good start, winning five of the first seven ends. Losing the next six ends straight saw Seymour take the lead and remain in front to win 20–18.
Division two remains fifth on the ladder and plays away against third-placed Shepparton Golf this week.
Division five played Katandra West at home and lost the match by 11 shots, 2–36 to 12–47.
Fay Hateley, Bill O’Connor, Glen Bell and George Pedler (s) won the lead on end 12, and bowling with belief, did not surrender the lead for the rest of the game to win by the narrowest of margins, 20–19.
Meanwile, Kyle Pedder, Nyoli Bell, Joyce White and Norm Billingsley (s) were in the game, only one down after the break, but were unable to stop a late charge by the Kats to lose 16–28. Avenel is sixth on the ladder and plays ladder-leader Dookie away in round 12.
Weekend pennant
Division four is in second place on the ladder after winning 16–94 to 2–69 against East Shepparton Lime 1 in round 11.
Jake Wall, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley and Noel Slater (s) were on fire to get 21–3 up at the break. East Shepparton improved in the second half but Avenel had laid the foundations for the win in the first half to seal a convincing 30–13 win.
Kate Donovan, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy and Josh McDonald (s) claimed a 25–18 win after taking the lead on end nine, though the scores didn't give justice to the closeness of the match - with third Grace Kenworthy hitting a purple patch in the second half and delivering some end-saving bowls with perfection to ensure the win for Avenel.
Once Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Howard Geldard and Brett McDonald (s) won the lead on the fifth end, they combined with determination to hold onto the lead in a close and thrilling game. The 21-18 win was hard fought but well deserved.
It was a tough day at the office for division six in a road trip to Shepparton Park. The home team had an easy win, 0–28 to 14–65. Joyce White, Fay Hateley, Norm Billingsley and George Pedler (s) lost the first eight ends to be down 0–14 on end eight. They won the next 17 ends 18–14 but the earlier 14-shot deficit proved too much to chase down, Avenel ultimately losing by 10 shots, 18-28.
Kyle Pedder, Graham Lewis, Glen Bell and Jason Toy (s) lost 10–37 in a lopsided game with Shepparton Park playing with accuracy and confidence. Avenel is fifth on the ladder and has a bye next week.
The chicken run last Sunday was won by Neville (s), Kate and Graeme. Thank you to this week's sponsor, Avenel Café.

Nagambie
Nagambie Bowls Club held its annual Australia Day tournament on Sunday, January 24, hosting players from many parts of Victoria. Always a popular tournament, teams travelled from as far as Gunbower, Sunbury, Richmond, Essendon and Heathcote to compete for the big prizemoney.
But it was the local team from Avenel consisting of Noel Slater, David Furletti and Paul Nichols which took home the chocolates. Runner-up was Sunbury's number two team of Bruce Wesley, Craig Ogle and Ryan Bellinger. The club extended a big thank you to all who helped make the day a success as well as local sponsors Royal Mail, ZephyrZ and Nagambie Rowing Club.
