Seven batters reach double figures for Rochester

Opening account: Sadie Martin opened the bowling for Rochester’s under-14 team in its opening round match with Tongala on Thursday evening. She took one wicket from her three overs and later scored 10 with the bat.

Seven of Rochester’s Goulburn Murray Cricket under-14 team scored double figures in a 62-run opening round win against Tongala at Brose Reserve on Thursday evening.

Tongala won the toss and batted. Cale James and Sadie Martin restricted the openers to two runs from the opening overs of the innings.

Mitchell Skeers then took the first of his two wickets and in the very next over Morgan Boyack took his only wicket of the innings.

Boyack bowled three overs, all maidens, and finished with the figures of 1-0.

Tongala recovered and after 10 overs was back on track when Martin was re-introduced to the attack and took the wicket of Mitchell Cornwall.

While surviving its 25-over allocation the runs were few and far between as only 20 wides allowed Rochester’s opponent to score a reasonable total.

Winning start: Cale James’ all-round performance for Rochester on Thursday evening saw him take a wicket and then retire with 10 runs to his credit in the run chase.

James and Martin both finished with 1-2 from three overs and Skeers 2-4 from three overs. Boyack and Benjamin Hewes were the other wicket takers.

Rochester’s run chase started with an early loss, but James and Martin (both 10 runs) combined with Boyack (retired 15) and Judd Cuttriss (retired 17) to dominate its opposition.

Boyack struck three boundaries and Cuttriss two deliveries to the rope, the only boundaries of the innings.

Asher Rasmussen, Patrick Henry Ward and Benjamin Hughes were the other batters to reach double figures and this weekend the Rochester team tackles Kyabram Fire Brigade Flames.
