Past and present Seymour Rotary members and special guests enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship and the opportunity to peruse the interesting memorabilia displayed on Saturday, May 18.
Three members were awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, one of the organisation’s greatest honours.
David Freeman, Allan Walton and John Keeffe were recognise for their exceptional contributions to Rotary and the community over the years.
Mr Keeffe spoke to those in attendance about the history of the club.
He then spoke briefly about charter president C.J.R. (Jack) Ansett.
Mr Ansett was instrumental in having 100 per cent of the club’s members contribute to the Foundation at Charter, a world first that no other club has achieved.
Mr Keeffe said “service above self” was part of the Rotary philosophy, pointing out that members not only raised money to fund worthy causes, but they also got out and got their hands dirty when the occasion called for it.
As for fundraising, the club has developed many and varied events since its beginning.
In the early 2000s, it conducted annual stud tours, with thoroughbred enthusiasts travelling by train to Seymour and then by coach to several of the horse studs in the district.
Other activities over the years have included pokie trips to clubs along the Murray, staffing the gates at the Seymour Show, collections at the Tallarook Service Centre, golf days, trivia nights, silent auctions, the Seymour market and the collection and sale of old lead acid batteries.
The afternoon was a wonderful celebration of Rotary’s valuable contribution to the local and broader community over the past 70 years.
