Kevin Sarre, a 17-year-old Lockington shearer, has won the junior and the learner’s championships at the Melbourne Royal Show.
Kevin, who is the son of Frank Sarre, a member of the partnership of well-known shearing contractors Arnold and Sarre, is only in his second season of shearing and bids fair to be an outstanding exponent of the art.
Last season he won the learner’s event at the Echuca show and finished fourth in the open class.
This year his father’s firm has been in charge of the contract for Perricoota and other well-known northern district sheds and Kevin has been astonishing the old hands by consistently reaching tallies of 150 daily, his best being 160.

District success at Melbourne Royal Show
Messrs Wilson, G. Berr and Sons, who have long been prominent for their exhibits at Echuca shows, had one of their best years at the Melbourne Royal Show both in sheep and cattle.
They had almost a clean sweep in the Border Leicester classes, taking four firsts and two seconds, which included the champion ewe and reserve champion ewe, and also took the Breeders Plate for the best team.
While Mr Beer concentrates his sheep at his Bunnaloo property, his dairy stud at Nanneella is also prominent for its Red Poll stock and at the Melbourne Show the same family combination scored four firsts and two seconds.
The successes were all in the class for dairy cows or heifers and they scored four firsts and two seconds.

High standard at spring flower show
The success of the annual spring flower show, staged yesterday by the Echuca Horticultural Society, provided proof of the increasing attention to horticulture in the town.
Yesterday’s exhibition was the fourth arranged this year by the society, and entries were well up to expectations with the standard, particularly in the floral art section, being exceedingly high.
The president of the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria, Mr W. A. Cowmeadow, after reviewing the quality of the blooms, advised exhibitors on points to be considered in preparing flowers for exhibition.
Praising the standard of the exhibits, Mr Cowmeadow commented that some of the blooms would be welcomed for a Melbourne Royal Show.

Mighty Echuca
“Up there Echuca” echoed around Deakin Reserve in Shepparton after the Murray Bombers blitzed Rochester in yesterday’s Goulburn Valley Football League grand final.
Echuca 14.15 (99) defeated Rochester 5.5 (35).
In front of a massive crowd, Echuca dominated arch rivals Rochester from the opening bounce and although the Tigers put up some stern resistance, they were no match for a determined, committed Echuca.
The Murray Bombers had winners on every line and the pressure they applied to Rochester was immense.

Smith does it again
Premierships don’t come easily in the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League.
Some players’ whole careers end without playing in a grand final, let alone winning one.
For others they come a lot sooner, as Lachy Smith found out.
One year after winning the 2015 GVFL premiership with Benalla, he has secured another one — only this time playing for the Kyabram Bombers.
He held the silverware high with girlfriend Elle Groves and her younger sister, Georgia, following last Sunday’s grand final at Deakin Reserve when three Bombers took out the win.

Our one-of-a-kind man celebrates centenary
When George Riordan was born, the world was a very different place.
The first true supermarket had just opened, Australia was nursing its wounds from the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, Billy Hughes was the nation’s prime minister and Fitzroy had just claimed a sixth VFL premiership.
That was September 22, 1916.
Fast forward to last Thursday at Bupa Aged Care in Echuca, the long-time Bamawm and Lockington resident celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by friends and four generations of family.

Brady burns up Berlin bitumen
Echuca-Moama runner Brady Threlfall burst into Commonwealth Games contention with a stunning run in the Berlin marathon on Sunday.
He smashed his previous best time by almost five minutes ― a stunning result at elite level ― and put himself within reach of the qualifying time used for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
An ecstatic Threlfall said when he was a 2.26 runner any chance of representing Australia was a long shot.
“But now I’m within striking distance. It is important that I sit down and reflect on what’s best for me professionally to ensure I have the best chance to give myself an opportunity to reach that 2.19 standard,” Threlfall told the Riverine Herald from Berlin soon after finishing.
