The newly formed Loch Garry Future Service Strategy Community Reference Group is being created by Goulburn-Murray Water, which is seeking expressions of interest from people interested in serving on it.
The group will provide advice during the development of the Loch Garry Flood Protection District Future Service Strategy.
“We’re looking for members who can draw on their local knowledge and experience and reflect the views of their community and other stakeholders,” G-MW general manager of strategy and service planning Steven Abbott said.
“Membership will include Loch Garry Flood Protection District customers, members of the surrounding community and stakeholders who have an interest in the loch and the district.”
The Loch Garry flood regulator was built at Bunbartha in 1925 and still relies on manual operation during floods.
It protects downstream landowners in the Bunbartha/Deep Creek area in minor to moderate flooding, but some say it contributed to flooding when boards could not be removed from the regulator during the October 2022 floods.
G-MW is undertaking the Loch Garry Flood Protection District Future Service Strategy to review the regulator’s future.
Its status as an ageing asset, along with the risk of more frequent and intense climate events and the substantial costs associated with a complete asset upgrade, have prompted the regulator’s review.
Expressions of interest for the reference group are now open and will close at 5pm on Monday, November 20.
