An official opening of the 145th annual Deniliquin Show was hosted, with former Pastoral & Agricultural Society president Chantelle Shevels given the honours of officiating.
Sponsors, representatives of Edward River Council, volunteers and long‑time supporters were also in attendance.
It set the tone for a warm and community‑minded evening, with pavilion results, trophy presentations and the induction of five new life members all taking centre stage.
This year’s life membership honours went to Lyn Rose, Judy Bond, Kevin Hare, Lynda Danckert and Richard Walker, a group whose combined service totals more than 240 years.
Among those in attendance was fellow life member Walter Beer, who has missed only about three shows since he began competing in 1960.
“It pretty near died (at one time), but it’s kicked on quite well in recent years,” he said, saying he was pleased to see the pavilion buzzing once again.
Mayor Ashley Hall addressed the gathering, congratulating the committee on another strong year and thanking them for their commitment to keeping the show thriving.
Current P&A president Ayla Nganeko Begg also delivered her first public speech in the role, expressing her gratitude to her committee and the volunteers who make the pavilion, and the show itself, possible.
Full displays were seen across the show with a number of delicious food items kept behind glass and away from hungry mouths.
Popular among onlookers across the whole weekend were the school displays.
With schools preparing since last year, many students were excited to get in and see if their artwork may have been the prize winner.
Other popular exhibits included the photography, artwork and craft sections, as many admired the talent on display.
