New councillors adopt budget

The first budget of the newly elected Mitchell Shire Council was adopted on Monday, May 19.

With a strong focus on key capital projects, service delivery and addressing challenges brought on by the current financial climate, the 2025-26 budget aims to respond to the needs of the expanding community.

Key highlights of the budget include:

$18.53 million allocated to maintaining and improving the road network, including continued upgrades to key roads across the shire;
$1.34 million to extend and renew footpaths, improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians;
$4.08 million for the development of community and recreational facilities; and
$16.14 million for the construction, expansion and upgrade of buildings across the shire.

There will be funding for a number of projects across the region.

Seymour Community Wellbeing Hub: $17 million
Seymour fenced dog-off-leash park: $233,000
Main Rd, Tallarook new section of footpath: $60,000
Harley Hammond Reserve netball courts and lighting upgrade, and play space: $1.167 million
Lancefield-Pyalong Rd reseal: part of the $5.345 million Sealed Road Renewal Program
J.J. Clancy Reserve: $908,000
Greater Beveridge Community Centre: $3.97 million
Wallan East Family and Children’s Community Centre: $20.15 million

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said the budget was a reflection of the new council’s commitment to creating a more connected, sustainable and thriving community.

“We understand the financial pressures faced by residents and businesses in our shire, especially with the new levy,” Cr Dougall said.

“This budget balances immediate needs with long-term goals, ensuring we continue to provide the services our community relies on while planning for future growth.

“This is the first budget of the new council and we have approached it with empathy for the challenges our community faces.

“We mainly focused on delivering projects that matter most to our residents, such as better roads, essential services and vibrant recreation spaces, all while ensuring we maintain financial sustainability for the long term.”
