Robert Pell entered Rockyleigh Saturn — she came midfield in a class of 14 heifers. Then she went to Bendigo Agricultural Show in 2005 and won the Beef Interbreed.
For 20 years we have entered cattle showing and beef carcase competitions, with huge success. We have a swag of ribbons, but more so, we have many more friends.
The highlight of showing was winning the Inaugural Benalla All Breeds Junior Classic with Cullenya Digby DBS D11, the inaugural Bendigo Beef Expo Junior Reserve Bull.
We entered two steers at Bendigo Beef — one came first, the other third.
Recently, our Mystical steers have done well at the Melbourne Royal Show, in partnership with Lockhart Central School in NSW, our steers will once again be entered at in the Royal Melbourne carcase competition in 2026.
Our females have also done well in the ring over the years, the Matrons are our foundation, the cows must carry and raise their calf on grass. The bulls must perform.
Now, let's talk about the ordinary cattle out there in the paddocks.
It doesn't matter a hoot how many trophies are on your shelf, if the cattle cannot perform in the paddock. A bull fed grain, hay and pumped up for the local show isn't going to perform the same as a bull raised on grass.
Mystical Murray Greys would take the paddock cattle to the local shows and win. Yes, they are broken to the halter to lead. What you see is what you get.
Recently, Robert has been unwell, so we have decided to reduce our breeders from 60 down to 30 females.
This is the goal. It's going to be difficult, as we only have good bloodlines, sourced from Monterey, Mt View, Michaelong, Silvergums Studs, as well as extensive artificial insemination.
If you're in the market for some lovely, quiet cattle, come and speak with us during Beef Week.
We also sponsor the Rochester Great Northern Show each year, held in February.
Mystical Murray Greys is located in Tatura.
