This is a part of the Victorian Government’s move to support the implementation of mobile phone and seatbelt detection camera technology as a part of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy for 2021-2030.
Each trailer has two cameras and an infrared flash enabled with artificial intelligence software.
The cameras take high-resolution images at any time of the day or night and in all traffic and weather conditions.
The AI technology reviews the images, and if it does not detect any potential offence, it will reject the photo.
However, if the AI detects a driver who may be using a portable device or not wearing a seatbelt, it flags the image for further review.
The images will then be checked and verified by qualified independent officers.
Drivers caught infringing by these cameras receive both a fine and demerit points.
The six camera trailers are placed on Anzac Ave, Emily St, High St, Tallarook St and two on the Goulburn Valley Hwy.
Motorists can view the list of cameras on the Victorian Government’s website, which will be updated monthly.
