While formal Murray River Council Australia Day celebrations for Mathoura were hosted at Picnic Point on Monday, other community members gathered for breakfast in the Mathoura Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens for another informal event on Monday.

The community members funded the breakfast themselves, with between 30 and 40 attending.
The gathering was organised to ensure there was an Australia Day event in Mathoura itself, partly in protest of council activities being moved out of the gardens for the first time in many years.

Final touches on phone book
It won’t be long now until the 2026 instalment of the Deniliquin Telephone & Business Directory is released.
The final touches are being completed as we speak.
The directory is a Deniliquin Business Chamber project, produced by the Deniliquin Pastoral Times.
This year’s cover will feature a stunning photo of a Deniliquin streetscape taken by local photographer Ryan Heffer.
Ryan submitted his photos for a Chamber competition last year, and PT readers and Chamber followers selected the cover image based on popular vote.
We’ll let you know as soon as the new phone book is available for purchase.
Heatwave to finish soon
It has been a very warm week in Deniliquin, and we are not out of the woods.
Temperatures are expected to hit 43℃ today and then 42℃ on Saturday, so it’s important to stay cool.
Temperatures will ease off on Sunday and into next week, with tops closer to 30℃.
NSW Health director of public health unit Alison Nikitas says on hot days, you should stay safe by seeking out cool places such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
Check in on those that the heat may affect more, particularly for older people, young children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone with existing health conditions.
Keep the heat out by closing windows and drawing blinds or curtains early in the day, and use fans or airconditioning if you have them to help maintain a safe indoor temperature.
BBQ upgrades
The covered barbecue area at Waring Gardens is temporarily closed while upgrade works take place, including a new barbecue unit and a fresh concrete slab.
The closure runs from Tuesday, January 27 to Friday, February 13, weather and works permitting.
Picnickers can still fire up a snag at nearby facilities in Civic Place or Scott’s Park.
Landfill hours change
Council has advised that due to extreme heat forecast for the rest of the week, the Deniliquin Landfill will close at 10am each day through to Saturday, January 31.
The site is expected to resume normal hours on Sunday, reopening from 8.30am to 1pm when cooler conditions return.
80 years on the river for DBC
The Deniliquin Boat Club is celebrating 80 years on the river, and locals can explore its story at a special exhibition now on at the Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery.
Running until February 16, the display features photos, memorabilia and stories highlighting the volunteers and river lovers who’ve kept the club at the heart of community life for eight decades.
It is a fitting tribute to a tradition that continues to bring Deni together on the water.
