On Saturday, August 22, not-for-profit Australian Defence Force support organisation Invictus Australia, in partnership with disability-led charity Freedom Sports Foundation, will deliver an introduction to inclusive and accessible sporting opportunities at the Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Invictus director of community participation and impact Toni Cumpston said attendees could expect “a safe, welcoming space” for a day of wheelchair sports.
“We want to show how adaptive sports bring people of all abilities together and level the playing field, whilst also providing an introduction and pathways for people to continue using sport as a way of getting active and connected with their local community,” Toni said.
“We hope that everyone learns that adaptive sports provide an opportunity to have a go, have some fun and connect in with a wonderful community, no matter their ability or skill level.”
The wheelchair sports day is marketed towards veterans and their families, which makes Seymour the perfect host town.
“There is a large defence community of both current and former serving veterans, and their families, in the Mitchell Shire,” Toni said.
“We know how important being connected is, and by providing an opportunity that is welcoming and inclusive, we hope to show the many benefits to health and wellbeing (of adaptive sports) by connecting in with local communities.”
Staying active and keeping connected have strong, lasting benefits.
The wheelchair sports day will provide a prime opportunity for veterans to begin their adaptive sporting journeys.
“The physical health benefits of engaging with sport speak for themselves; however, for veterans and families looking for opportunities outside the defence environment, the challenge can be taking that first step and whether you will be welcomed,” Toni said.
“By creating a safe space, we give the local defence community the chance to connect with others who understand defence life and experience adaptive sport on a level playing field.
“With clear pathways to stay involved beyond the event, we hope more veterans and their families feel supported to get active and connected.”
