The unique exhibition displays the story of Indian hawkers, travelling merchants who sold goods up and down the old Hume Hwy.
Many travelled along what is our current Hume Fwy, and walked along the railway line through the town in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Historians Len Kenna and Crystal Jordan have researched and documented their journeys, culminating in this exhibition of photographs, paintings, historical artefacts and sculptures depicting the Indian community’s work and life.
Ms Jordan said sections of the exhibition had toured eastern Australia and India, and were warmly received wherever shown.
“This is the first time the exhibition has been shown in its entirety,” she said.
“It is especially suitable for all Australians, as this is the world that their parents and grandparents grew up in.”
The exhibition is presented by the Australian Indian Historical Society Inc in partnership with the Jubilee Park Committee of Management and local community member Valda Klaric, who generously sponsored the extensive display.
The exhibition will be set up in the community hub on Queen St, Avenel, and will be opened by state Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland at 10am on Sunday, October 12.
Guest speaker Jaswinder Singh, co-founder of Sikh volunteers Australia, will also be in attendance.
Jubilee Park Committee of Management chairperson Anne Douglas said the exhibition would provide education about the local community’s history.
“This exhibition showcases a unique and diverse community that was part of Avenel’s history,” Ms Douglas said.
“Learning more about our history and the people who contributed to it is a great celebration of our past.”
