The name came about because Gordon Smith drew Block 8 in the Ellerslie Estate War Service Settlement at Adelong, and his wife, June, wanted a name with ‘Glen’ in it to reflect their Scots heritage.
In 1974 Gordon spent most of the inheritance from his parents on stud cows to start a Hereford stud in memory of them, hence the legacy of 'Glenellerslie' began. It continues now as a family operation with Ross and Mandy, and Blake and Carly Smith.
The Smiths have endeavoured to breed cattle with size and muscle while also retaining doing ability, which are also the attributes of the cattle we select in our breeding program.
Milking ability of our herd has been a focus for us, with such significant success that we now only artificially inseminate our heifers, not cows, and some of our best bulls are being bred from these heifers.
We believe colour is an important and renowned attribute of Herefords, and we pride ourselves on the dark, evenness of coats, and a well-mannered herd.
