The September 10 event brought groups like the local Taungurung people to educate on the importance of the environment with talks on history and cultural burning. There were also wetland cruises and tours of the flora trial which highlighted 12 species which the Taungurgang used to use as part of everyday life.
Earlier this year, as part of a partnership with children’s environment education company Pretorus, Tahbilk hosted students from Avenel and St Joseph’s primary schools, who spent a day learning about the environment and cultural significance of Tahbilk.
The students made a book about what they had learnt.
The festival was planned as a celebration of the children’s time at Tahbilk by inviting them and their families back for a book launch.
The student visit and festival were funded by the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions fund designed to increase eco-tourism.
However, the festival expanded to become a showcase of Tahbilk’s natural environment for families right across the region to enjoy.
