On Tuesday, January 6, partial extreme heat timetables will be enacted on the Shepparton line, as well as the Seymour, Echuca, Bendigo and Swan Hill lines.
On Wednesday, January 7, full extreme heat timetables will affect all lines on the V/Line network, except for the Albury line.
These timetables are put in place when temperatures exceed 36°C, where speed restrictions are enforced to reduce the likelihood of train and track faults, and to ensure passenger safety.
Journey times are extended due to the reduced speed of the trains.
Passengers are advised to plan ahead and check the V/Line website before travelling on days when the extreme heat timetables are in place.
The Department of Transport and Planning also advises motorists to prepare for the hotter conditions, with temperatures forecasted to reach 45°C in some parts of the state.
It recommends motorists to avoid travelling during the hottest time of the day, where possible, and encourages drivers to check brakes, tyres, oil and water, and ensure there’s enough fuel and charge for the trip to avoid vehicle breakdowns.
In the event of a breakdown, drivers should attempt to stop or park in the shade and avoid parking on long, dry grass, which becomes a potential fire hazard due to the hot exhaust system.
All motorists and public transport travellers should carry fresh drinking water to stay hydrated.
The department also reminds drivers to never leave children or pets unattended in a car, as temperatures can quickly rise to dangerous levels and just a few minutes can have tragic consequences.
