Ill health has forced Mr Metry to give up his beloved bi-monthly auctions at the Euroa Showgrounds.
He says he has loved every minute of the journey, with every “cluck and crow”.
In 1990, after his first daughter died, he was asked to do an auction at Euroa.
“Little did I know, it was the lifeline I needed,” Mr Metry said.
“I sold 400 pens in three hours, and it saved me. This brought me back to life, after such a devastating loss.”
Other auctions along the east coast of Australia followed, but he kept up his regular commitments in Euroa, only interrupted by COVID-19.
The Euroa auctions have attracted show people and backyard poultry farmers from Sydney and Melbourne who wanted to choose from an average offering of 1500 to 2000 birds.
The top price Mr Metry can recall is $995 for a guinea fowl.
The planned August auction in Euroa was cancelled at short notice as Mr Metry was being admitted to hospital.
Poultry auctions are still being held at the Tarameade poultry selling complex at Toolern Vale.
