While Katamatite has not been included at this stage, state Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy said he was confident this would be amended in the coming days.
The Nationals MP said he had formally written to the appropriate state and federal ministers outlining the severity of the impact of the fires on local families, farmers and businesses, calling for all affected towns to be recognised under disaster recovery arrangements.
“This outcome is important for communities that have endured significant loss and disruption as a result of the Yarroweyah fires,” Mr McCurdy said.
“It is good to see common sense prevail and for affected towns to receive the recognition and assistance they clearly deserve.”
Support has been activated with access to the Disaster Recovery Payment, providing vital assistance to those impacted on the ground.
Mr McCurdy also acknowledged the role of Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell in pursuing the matter and assisting to get it over the line.
“Sam Birrell has been persistent and constructive in advocating for our region, and his efforts have been instrumental in ensuring communities impacted by these fires were not overlooked,” he said.
“This result reflects what can be achieved when representatives work together and keep the pressure on.”
Mr McCurdy said while the funding was an important step, recovery from the Yarroweyah fires would take time, and he will continue to push for further support where needed.
“Our communities are resilient, but they should not have to fight for help after disaster strikes,” he said.
“I will keep standing up for Ovens Valley to make sure no town is left behind.”
