After weather interrupted some of the competitions last week, there were no issues this week.
On Wednesday, the women played a stableford round and Di Byrne (18) was the winner with a score of 36 points. The extra competition of the best even holes also went to Di Byrne with 21 points. The ball pool went to Di Byrne, Ricky Rickman and Dale Stuart with 31 points.
In the men’s competition John Boruch 11) had a terrific score of 41 points to win the day. The runner-up was Bill Keating (21) with 39 points. Nearest the pin on the 6th was Peter Nelson, on the 12th it was Bill Keating, Greg Pell was closest on the 17th and the 4th stayed with the club. A score of 34 points was needed to be in the ball pool.
Stubby Byrnes (25) won the mixed 9 hole competition with 14 points. The next best was Duncan Chisholm with 13 points and Phil Block also got in the ball pool with 12 points.
The Friday social 6 holes were played over holes 1-6 and the game was stableford. Bill Keating (21) and Peter Nelson (5) shared the win when both had a very good score for 6 holes of 15 points.
On Thursday, the club held its annual general meeting and it was great to see Rob Oldman become a Life Member of the club.
Rob is almost a permanent fixture at the course and spends a lot of his time, when not managing the bar, doing maintenance on the course or just being available for visitors to the club.
Generally speaking, if you want to know about the club or the course, Rob is likely to be able to help you. He is a valuable member of the club who is a well-deserved addition to the Life Membership board.
The new committee was appointed and for those who were unable to attend, the new committee members are: Sue McCall (President); Graham Welsh (Treasurer), Phil Jarvis (Men’s Captain), Irene Davey (Women’s Captain), Paula Britton (Secretary), John Muscovich (Green’s Director); Rob Oldman, Ian Richardson and Jane Fletcher.
On Saturday, it was the Geoff Head Memorial monthly medal and in stark contrast to last week, it was a mild and perfect winter’s day.
Mick Prorok had his first ever medal win with his score of 78-8=70 which also won him A grade. The B grade winner was Rob Oldman with 89-18=71 and C grade was won by Mick Papworth with 94-21=73. The best scratch score went to Peter Nelson with 77. The nearest the pins went to Greg Pell on the 4th, Dave Hamilton on the 6th, Dave Enricho on the 12th and Bill Keating on the 17th.
The drive and pitch on the 8th was won by Greg Pell and the 15th by Peter Nelson. The ball pool stretched out to net 76.
In the women’s results, the low scores seemed to be harder to achieve with the best score and medal win going to Paula Britton with 89-12=77.
The nearest the pin on the 17th hole was Tania Zentveld. The ball pool went to Paula Britton, Dale Stuart and Tania Zentveld with net 80.
On Friday, the social 6 holes is stableford over holes 10-15. Next Saturday is second round of the Winter Cup for both the men and women and competition is stableford.
Avenel
Last Tuesday was a stableford round and the Ladies also played for the June Silver Spoon (which was previously washed out).
Marlene Hull was the winner with 34 points and received a lovely trophy from Dee Wright, as well as the silver spoon. Ball winners were Marlene and Dave Fullager who scored 32 points. The NTP ball was unclaimed.
Saturday was stroke and both the men and ladies played off the short course. The men’s numbers were down a bit with several players competing in a tournament at Tocumwal — don’t think any trophies were brought home though.
Tim Batten had a good round of 87, nett 73, to win the day’s event. Bill Eddy was runner-up with 74 nett and both players were ball winners. However, the NTP and birdie balls remained with the club.
As it turned out, the ladies were also contesting the July Silver Spoon, which Captain Lyn collected with 72 nett. Lyn and Anne Burns were ball winners but as with the men, no-one was near enough to claim the NTP ball.
We are hosting the Dalhousie Vets tournament tomorrow and they have decided to play a Par 3 course. Dave Fullager has marked out the course and drawn up the cards and it will be interesting to see what the scores are like. Pretty sure it’s 9.30 hit-off, so any Vets wishing to play should be at the course by 9am to register.
The annual tournament is fast approaching and flyers will be out shortly. We have the Pioneer Park 4BBB Par event on Saturday, August 3, and the Men’s Open Championship on Sunday, August 4. It will be an 11.30am hit-off on both days, and afternoon tea is included with entry fee.
Once again, we have great sponsorship for the Men’s Day including a chance to win $1000 for a hole in one on any par 3 or $500 for scoring an eagle on a par 4 or 5 (of course, if there’s more than one the prizes will be shared).
Entries can be lodged with Lyn or Lance Carracher, phone 0427 985 268 or 57985268.
Committee members — don’t forget there’s a meeting tonight at 7.30pm at the clubhouse.
Finally, there’s quite a lot of small branches and leaf debris lying around so if anyone has a little time to spare, please consider dropping out to the course and picking some up.
This Saturday will be a par round with a difference. So you come along and see what it is. Tuesday will be a stableford round.
Good golfing to everyone.
Nagambie
With winter pennant having a break for a week a good field of golfers assembled for the July monthly medal.
Graeme Galvin was the medal winner with the first score in a month of golf at Nagambie to be better than handicap. Graeme fired an 83-12-71 to take home the medal by 2 shots with his round consisting of some excellent long driving of the ball and capitalising on the greens where it counts. Runner-up with his usual workman like round went to Shane McCormick 82-9-73. Next best went to Jeremy Ezard with a nett 75 followed by Shaun Bryant with nett 76.
Only one nearest the pin was recorded that went to Jeremy Ezard on the 8th.
Next week will see the resumption of winter pennant with division 4 playing Kialla at Shepparton and division 6 hoping to continue there winning ways taking on Shepparton at Hill Top. Local golf will be the 2nd round of the social club trophy - stableford. On office duty is D. Love and in the bar J. Lodding.
