In a recent ‘Fair Go For Farrer’ column, Vicki Meyer raised the need for new hospitals in Albury and Deniliquin.
For the past 18 months I have been advocating for a new hospital on a new site for Albury-Wodonga.
Not to be disruptive, but because it is what the 300,000 people of our region need, and what we deserve.
While talking to people in the Deniliquin district, I have also been made aware that a new Deniliquin Hospital is well overdue, and would have significant benefits not only for the Deni region, but also for Albury.
At present, there is a steady stream of patients from the Southern Riverina who travel to Albury because their local health services have declined and their infrastructure has not kept pace with community needs.
The community understands that what is currently being proposed in Albury falls well short of what is required for a growing regional centre, while Deniliquin and district just keeps waiting and its residents keep travelling … and in doing so are putting more pressure on services in Albury.
We’re generally told to simply accept this situation across the Farrer electorate and “make do”, but that is not good enough for the people of our region.
Regional Australians should not be expected to lower their expectations when it comes to healthcare.
The Federal Government has a responsibility to ensure all Australians have access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live.
Ignoring the problem will not make it disappear.
Yours etc.
