If you believe the bookmakers, then Helen Dalton will be returned as the Member for Murray tomorrow night.
Mrs Dalton is the $1.50 favourite according to leading bookmaker Sportsbet to retain the seat she won in 2019 as a member of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party.
In 2019, Mrs Dalton attracted 38.75 per cent of first preferences compared to Nationals candidate Austin Evans, who polled 35.22 per cent.
That distilled into a two-party preferred result of 53.54 per cent to 46.46 per cent in favour of Mrs Dalton.
Nationals candidate Peta Betts is rated the greatest challenger to Mrs Dalton, installed as a $2.50 shot by Sportsbet.
Ms Betts, also the Edward River Council Mayor, has concentrated many of her efforts this campaign in Griffith and Deniliquin.
Despite repeated attempts during the past few weeks The Riv was unable to secure an interview with the Nationals candidate.
Labor’s Max Buljubasic is on the third line of betting at $26 with the party looking to improve on the 8.75 per cent first preference vote it attracted in 2019.
Labor preferences may prove pivotal in the final wash-up.
From a statewide point of view, Labor is the overwhelming favourite to be the sworn in government at $1.15 with the Coalition at $5.50.
But if you delve a little deeper, the betting trends say Labor will not get a majority to govern in its own right and will need the support of independents.
A Labor minority is the $1.67 favourite on the type of government formed market and a Labor majority the $3.50 second-elect.
Labor needs 47 seats to form majority government.
Heading into the election, the Coalition (Liberal/Nationals) has 45 seats and Labor 37, with 11 on the crossbench (featuring Greens and independent).
