Cr Nicholls told the Free Press that he would remain on council until the end of the council term in September 2024, as he plans to retain ownership of his shop in Sanger St, which allows him to comply with local government rules and continue to serve as a council member.
“I have a genuine desire to continue to support and be the voice for our community, including the 932 people that voted for my group in the last election,” he stated.
Cr Nicholls, who addressed Tuesday’s monthly meeting during the delegate reports, has been actively involved in various organisations as part of his councillor role, contributing to the wellbeing and development of the Federation Council. Some of his key involvements include the Local Health Advisory Committee, the Murray Darling Basin Association, and his roles on the board of Murray Arts and the Federation Arts Committee.
“To reiterate, I will remain in my elected position until such time as I resign. I am able to do so under the Local Govt Act Section 275 subsection 3 and per OLG advice received today (Tuesday),” he said.
“Not one constituent I’ve spoken to has voiced their objection to my intent. In fact, many have said they’re pleased to hear I’ll be showing my commitment as long as I can - as that’s why they elected me to office.
“This intent is to attend as many meetings online or by phone as possible; travelling only when this option is impossible, and the meeting critical.
“Whether or not you allow my presence in Ordinary Meetings will be a testament to you upholding the spirit of cooperation and conciliation we have worked so hard to build these last years - but this is your choice, and the public will be watching.
“It’s also important to note that during Covid, all meetings moved online. This time proved to the Government and business that embracing this contemporary (and more efficient) method is of little consequence to achieving meeting outcomes.”
