Council has announced it has completed its roadside spraying program, and will commence roadside slashing once spring growth slows and grass begins to dry off.
Council is also working with local CFA brigades to support community education and preparedness events across the shire.
Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said keeping the community safe over summer was a partnership.
“Council is doing its part on roadsides, and we are working alongside our local CFA brigades,” Cr Dougall said.
“But the work people do on their own properties makes a real difference too.
“Please do not wait until the weather heats up. A few hours in the garden now could protect your home, your family and your neighbours later.”
Council is encouraging residents to cut grass and clear away dead leaves, twigs and garden waste around their homes, clean out gutters and trim branches overhanging the house, and move woodpiles and other flammable materials away from the house.
Residents should also ensure they update their fire plan and talk through it with family members, download the VicEmergency app for warnings and alerts, and follow council’s burn-off rules.
For those planning burn-offs, they must be registered with the CFA before lighting.
Across the shire, local CFA brigades are set to host Get Fire Ready events throughout October, where residents can get advice from local volunteers.
In Seymour, a Get Fire Ready event will be held on Sunday, October 11 at the Seymour Cup from 10am to 3pm.
Hilldene Fire Brigade will host its Get Fire Ready event, along with a free community barbecue and outdoor cinema, on Saturday, November 7 from 5pm at Hilldene Fire Station.
“These events are a great chance to talk with your local brigade and leave with a plan,” Cr Dougall said.
“I encourage everyone to go along to one near them.”
