On Monday, May 18, the club celebrated with members from its sister branch, Youanmite, as well as those from branches within the Moira group.
Benalla Rural City Mayor Bernie Hearn attended and opened the proceedings, and stayed for the celebrations and afternoon tea.
Thoona Hall was packed for the celebration.
Early in the morning, the electricity in Thoona Hall went off.
Much of the celebrations were conducted by candlelight. A generator, supplied by Doug James, was used to power the kettle and provide obligatory cups of tea.
Attendees celebrated 80 years of the branch with a cake.
Memorabilia from the early days was on display, along with information and crafts from recent times.
“It was a very enjoyable afternoon and the power came back on just as they were serving afternoon tea,” a Thoona CWA spokesperson said.
Over the years, the branch has become known for its great work in supporting its local community, especially women and children.
