Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn shared her excitement at the news.
“This is such a proud moment for our community,” she said.
“The Benalla Street Art Festival has turned our town into a must-visit destination.
“It’s not just about the incredible street art – it’s about the way it brings people together, supports local businesses, and shows off everything that makes Benalla so special.”
The festival, held annually in autumn, transforms Benalla into a vibrant outdoor gallery, with large-scale murals, artist talks, workshops, and community events.
Since its return in 2024, the festival has gone from strength to strength, cementing Benalla’s reputation as the street art capital of regional Australia.
Council nominated the festival for its significant contribution to the community and local economy.
The event attracts thousands of visitors each year, boosting local businesses, accommodation providers, and tourism operators.
It also fosters a strong sense of local pride, with community members actively involved in the festival’s success.
“The festival is a real game-changer for Benalla,” Cr Hearn said.
“It’s not just about the three days of the event – the murals stay up all year round, turning our town into an openair gallery that people can enjoy any time.
“It’s a win for our community, our businesses, and our visitors.”
The 2025 festival featured over 85 murals, a buzzing festival hub, and a packed program of fringe events that brought the town to life.
By integrating with regional tourism strategies, such as the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail, the festival encourages longer stays and greater visitor spending across the region.
“Being recognised at the VTIC Awards is a huge honour,” Cr Hearn said.
“It’s a testament to the hard work of our council team, artists, volunteers, and community.
“We’re so grateful for the support that makes this festival possible.”
The Benalla Street Art Festival will return from April 17–19, promising even more colour, creativity, and community connection.
With plans already under way, next year’s festival is set to be bigger and better than ever.
