Benalla’s Royal Australian Navy veterans honoured the memory of Captain Hec Waller and all those lost in the Battle of Sunda Strait on Sunday, March 1.
A touching service in memory of Benalla legend Hec Waller and the Battle of Sunda Strait was held at the town’s cenotaph on Sunday, March 1.

The memorial service was organised by Benalla RSL, and secretary Heather Hartland said it was well supported.
“Thank you to all who attended,” Ms Hartland said.
Veterans gathered at Benalla Cenotaph on Sunday, March 1 for a special service in memory of Captain Hec Waller and the Battle of Sunda Strait.
“We were honoured to have Mr Keith Ashfold, whose brother was on the HMAS Perth, attending.
“We also had Commander Helen Ward RAN, visiting ship liaison officer for Victoria, who was our guest speaker.”
This annual ceremony honours Captain Hec Waller, as well as the crews of two ships, the USS Houston and HMAS Perth, which were lost in the battle.
“Benalla RSL plans to hold this service every year as part of our regular schedule of events,” Ms Hartland said.
