The event caters to local men of all backgrounds who come together at YMCLC for a sausage and a chat and has been held twice already with a great attendance.
YMCLC community support officer, Kellie Robilliard said the idea for the event came about six weeks ago from conversations within the community.
“It started when someone posed a question about the need for a men’s support group, and it really stuck with me,” Kellie said.
“As I spoke with people, I realised there was a noticeable gap in the kinds of groups available for men.
“While there are plenty of great community initiatives, not many cater specifically to men in a way that feels approachable and informal.
“It became clear that there was a need for a space where men could simply come together, talk, and support one another, without the pressure of joining a formal club or making a long-term commitment.
“Things moved quite quickly after that because the need was clear and the response was encouraging. It’s been a short journey so far, but a meaningful one.”
Statistics show that men are less likely to seek health assistance, open up about their mental health and that they have a higher rate of suicide.
The Bush BBQ Brotherhood is a mental health-focused initiative, but in a relaxed, approachable way.
“I wanted to create a space where men feel genuinely comfortable opening up about what’s on their mind, whether it’s their own health, their partner’s, or a mate’s,” Kellie said.
“It’s about offering a place where they can check in with their mates, or have their mates check in with them - no pressure, no expectations.
“Sometimes, all someone needs is a chat and a bit of connection.”
Bush BBQ Brotherhood is not about formal presentations or structured sessions; it’s simply a chance to connect with others, have a cuppa, and chat – about health, relationships, work, or just life in general.
