Defence school mentor Kelly Quigg said Axl Muller and Alana Frost stood out from the outset during the process of recruiting next year’s defence captains.
“Axl has a calm, thoughtful nature and a great sense of responsibility, while Alana brings enthusiasm, warmth and a natural ability to connect with others,” Ms Quigg said.
“Together, they balance each other out beautifully and share a genuine respect for what it means to be part of a defence family.
“I have every confidence they’ll make an incredible team.”
In their new roles, Axl, who’s been at the school since 2019, and Alana, who started in 2023, both aim to form a strong relationship within the defence cohort at the college.
“I just wanted to be a part of the community, and because I’m defence as well, I just wanted to help other students who are defence and be a role model for them,” Alana said.
“(I want to) be involved in everything that goes on in the school and all of the assemblies that we can do.”

Axl added that the leadership side of the role was what drew him to apply.
“I wanted to be a defence captain because it’s my last year, and I’ve never done something like this, so I thought I’d give it a shot,” he said.
“I wanted to set an example for other defence people because more will come next year, and they need someone to look up to and ask if they need help.”
Stepping into their roles with ease, the pair have already had meaningful contact with the community.
On Remembrance Day, the captains attended and spoke at Seymour’s service, held at the Memorial Hospital Gates outside Seymour Health.
Ms Quigg said she was blown away by Axl and Alana’s first speaking event.
“It was such a proud moment,” she said.
“Watching them stand tall, speak with confidence and represent our defence community with such maturity was truly heartwarming.
“They handled themselves with so much grace and respect — it’s moments like that which remind me why I love this role so much. Seeing them already step up and embrace their responsibilities made me very excited for the year ahead.”
Looking forward, Axl is hoping to expand the school’s defence club, while Alana wants to create an inclusive environment for all the defence students.
