A member for 22 years, Mr Hangan has worn several hats in the organisation, including stints as president, secretary and treasurer.
Mr Hangan has been volunteering since he was 16 and struggled to think of a community group with which he had not been involved.
“I am very honoured, but I wasn’t expecting this recognition,” Mr Hangan said.
“I was told to get dressed for a photo for our usual trip to the club but I had no idea what it was for.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of being a volunteer. You get to help the community and meet amazing people.
“Everyone should take some time to do some volunteering. Nothing feels better than getting involved in the place you live.
“If you give it a crack you will find it is very enjoyable and fulfilling.”
